Washington vs Sunderland RCA

Review

Washington took the lead in the first half thanks for a goal for Vinny Gash in what could be considered a battle. In a game where the Referee was central around three major talking points after poor decisions against the home team.

Early in the game Harry Wood was forced to limp off after an out of control challenge. The referee only seen fit to punish the culprit with a free kick in what should have been a sending off in todays game. It has to be said Washington dominated the first half and had several chances to extend their lead.

In the second half Sunderland RCA came out stronger and more focused. They created more of the early chances, but the Washington defence held strong, often putting their bodies on the line making tackles and blocking shots.

Gardner controlled the mid field and in one of the better performances of the season. His long passing was getting Gash and Hanson into dangerous areas. However, Washington were the masters of the own downfall. Just after the hour, Gladstone received a back pass in the 18 yard box. He beat the first player on him, but with RCA pushing high he was caught in possession giving Larkin an easy finish

The game, and controversy was not over with there. Washington still had chances to take the lead but were unable to convert them. RCA should have been reduced to 10 (or maybe it should have really been 9) mean when a rash two footed challenge on Dent only warranted a yellow card from the referee.

To add further insult to injury, Jak Hanson was pulled back and brought down by a defender when through on for goal. No foul given by the referee in what could have been a penalty and red card. The Washington players, bench and fans were incensed by the decision making in a game that would have been won.

It almost seems like a life time ago since our season opener against RCA. So much has happened since then. But it is safe to say, in the league, Sunderland RCH have faired better than us.

Our visitors currently sit 11th in the League on 37 points. They reached the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, and were only knocked out of the FA Vase after a 2nd round replay with Runcorn Linnets.

Their most recent three games have been as follows:

Team Northumbria         Away     0-2
Stockton Town                  Away     2-0
Morpeth Town                  Home    0-2

In the meeting between the two sides earlier in the season it was RCA who took the lead early on through a penalty. RCA were reduced to 10 men after 55 minutes and Washington scored the equaliser two minutes later.

Washington go into the game after a somewhat unsettled period. They have only had one game since parting with Manager James Clark.  And it was a baptism of fire for Interim Manager Michael Laws.  Stockton inflicted a 7-2 hammering, the Mechanics biggest defeat of the season. It was a frustrating night. Due to injuries Washington only had three defenders available for selection. And Laws was forced to make changed in his defence due to Gibbon and Brown picking up knocks during the game. They finished with Chimbonda the only natural defender on the pitch.

Washington are without Suspended Matty Parker. The injury list includes Laws, Captain Alex White. And will be conducting late fitness tests on Connor Gardner, Callum Dent and Andy Brown.

The Mechanics are hoping to get a few wins together and close the gap on Jarrow Roofing BCA before what will be a massive 6-point match next Saturday.
