Recap

In a match against opposition who many consider are one of the favorites for promotion Washington completely dominated the game and won comfortably.

The return of Keeper Dan Gladstone and midfielder Jake Pickard proved to be a major factor in the game. Although Gladstone had relevantly little pressure on his goal from Heaton, he was instrumental in staring the buildup and flow of the game. Washington’s defence looked more confident with the return of the Number 1.

In the first half Heaton played with a high back line and Washington’s pacey forwards, playing on the shoulders of the defense, were regularly caught offside. In reality if they’d held the runs just a little longer they would have been comfortably leading at half time

In the second half Heaton’s defence was finally broken down and Washington’s interplay, and the pace of Jewson in particular, caused many problems for the home team. Well worked goals by Jewson, Waters and Gary Shaw earned the Mechanics the win they richly deserved.

This morning I was able to catch-up with Washington Manager James Clarke

Last night’s game against Heaton Stannington provided a good end of pre season test for us.

I thought we handled the game brilliantly with an air of authority and offered a great response to the disappointment of the Jarrow game. It was good to welcome Dan Gladstone back in the team giving us extra security and composure especially when playing out from the back.

Our ball retention was exceptional at times and if we move it quicker at times we will only get better. Our team is still in its infancy and we have players who despite their age continue to impress. I thought Stephen Edwards offered a different dimension to the team last night with some real cut and thrust play, giving Jordan Jewson opportunity to play on the shoulder and he was rewarded for all his hard work with a great finish for the opening goal.

One thing that has really impressed me is the way the group keep playing to our principals and never shy away from the ball whatever the situation and from wide areas as the game went on we continued and kept creating chances. We have some good strength in depth in our squad and a real belief in each other and what we are trying to Achieve.

Overall it was a good performance and we move on looking forward to the FA cup game on Saturday.

Next Game, Dunstan UTS in the Emirates FA Cup
