(Half Time: Dunston UTS 1 – Washington FC 0)

Washington came into the game on the back of a home win against Newton Aycliffe, hoping they could build on the league victory with a win in the Cup. However today’s opponents, Dunston UTS have already beaten Washington in the League and F.A. Cup this season.
Washington welcomed new signings Cameron Wilson and Samuel Grieveson to the squad.
It was Dunston who opened the attempts on target tally with a shot, easily saved by Washington Keeper Dan Gladstone on 3 minutes. Two minutes later Matty Waters too a long rage effort going just over the bar. But first blood was drawn after 6 minutes when Dunston’s Mark Fitzpatrick broke into the box and fired hope for the opener.
Dunston came close again after 10 minutes when a clearance Alex White was shot just over the bar by Dunston. The home team were looking much the better team in the opening exchanges. Washington needed to gain composure, bring the ball down and start to plat football.
The glimmer of hope for Washington was Shaun Pickford down the right. He case Dunston the most problems, however there seemed to be a lack in support and when it was there Washington couldn’t keep the ball. But they had fight and spirit in them.
Matty Waters came close on 24 minutes getting on the end of a Dunston clearance and shooting just wide. Only for Dunston to break forward and cause a heart in mouth moment after a ball across the Washington six yard box was eventually cleared by Rhys Evans. More solid defending from White kept the Dunston attack at bay.
Just after the half hour a break down the Dunston left by Scott Heslop saw Gladstone rushing off his like to be beaten by the attacker. Heslop was brought down by the Keeper who was promptly show a yellow card. If they had been further infield it could have been red.
First half injury time resulted in both teams getting corners. Dunston comfortably cleared the Washington attack, the home team came close with the last touch of the half. The shot from their corner tipped the top of the crossbar.

As we have seen often this season, Washington came out brighter and more assured in the second half. Better passing and consistent play seemed to be a good sign for the Mechanics.
However after 5 minutes Dunston broke into the box after some slack Washington defend. a brilliant double block from point blank by Gladstone kept Washington in the game. Minutes later Gladstone was called into action again tipping a Dunston shot just over the bar. But it didn’t last. On 65 minutes Dunston doubled their lead. 2-0
63′ Washington Sub: 20 Samuel Grieveson On; 7 Matthew Fisher Off
Debut for the new singing
Moments after Dunston broke down their left. Another rush of blood from Gladstone. Another foul. Another Yellow. His second followed by a Red. Gladstone protests to the referee but he had no case. Washington down to 10 men.
67′ Washington Sub: 8 Kristian Sands On; 14 Cameron Wilson Off
Sands goes in Goal
Dunston building on this momentum looked to take advantage of Sands playing out of position. But the stand in keeper could hold his own. Some early saves kept Dunston at bay, for now.
After 72 minutes Sands was left picking the ball out the back of the net. Nothing he could do about Dunstons 3rd goal. It was only 6 more minutes for Dunston to find the net again. A good ball forward left Washington short at the back. Scott Heslop rounded the keeper and rolled the ball in the empty goal 4-0.
Dunston now in control had a shot saved by Sands then cleared off the line with 10 minutes to play. The home team found goal again two minutes later making it 5-0.
But Washington would not roll over. They can take pride from not letting their heads drop. Water and Grieveson worked together trying to get consolation goal but it just wasn’t Washington’s day. New singing Grieveson looks a good prospect and just needs to get a bit match fitness.
89′ Washington Sub: 19 Callum Dent ON; 19 Shaun Pickford OFF
In the final minutes Washington keep up the pressure Waters has a good shot blocked.
