Saturday 19 August 2017 Nissan Sports & Leisure Complex, Washington Road, Sunderland, SR5 3NS Kick off - 3:00 pm Ebac Northern League - Division 1 Attendance: 74
Washington welcomed local rivals Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club to the Nissan Sports & Leisure Complex. As the crow flies Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club are the closest team in the league and became only the second team to travel here this season.
It was a sunny but windy afternoon and the weather would have an influence on the game. Washington played the first half with the wind to their back. It was Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club who came out the traps stronger. With a couple of chances not really coming to much.
But then Washington started to get a foothold in the game. Rhys Evans down the left and Bruno Pilatos on the right were causing all kinds of problems for Jarrow. At times delivery from midfield was pinpoint accurate. And upfront Adam Shanks was proving a force to be reckoned with.
Washington further grew into their game and Jake Pickard controlled everything that was happening in the middle of the pitch. And it was Pickard that started the move leading to the first Washington goal after 18 minutes. A ball out to the left allowed Rhys Evans to beat his man and deliver a ball into the six-yard box. Perfectly placed was new singing Pete Watling to finish from close range. 1-0 Washington in the lead for the first time this season.
And Washington didn’t let off on the pressure. A driven corner cannoned off the post. On the half hour Washington came close again. Pickard again getting a quality ball into the box aimed at Shanks only for the Jarrow’s Goal Keeper, Shaun Newbrook to make a solid stop at the feet of the striker. Two minutes later Washington came close to adding a second through Watling, superbly taking down a bouncing ball on the turn and hit a first time shot. Only to be save down low to the right of Jarrow’s Keeper.
Washington were in full flow and the midfield were dominating the game. This time a run down the right from Pilatos earned Washington a corner. A deadly delivery from Pilatos cause panic in the Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club defence who were lucky to put it over for another corner. Pilatos this time delivering from the left where a shot was cleared off the line and behind for a Washington third corner. This time the Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club keeper was able to safely gather.
With 10 minutes to go Pilatos beat his man to cross for Watling bringing another save from Newbrook. The confidence was growing in the Washington players and close to the end of the first half Jake Pickard tried a shot from distance and only just missing.
But that is not how the first half would finish. Two minutes into injury time a hopeful shot from Lee Kerr dipped under Washington Goal Keeper, Dan Gladstone and Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club were level. Just before the break Matty Parker was adjudged to have used an elbow in a challenge and was booked by the referee. That lead to arguments between players and officials as they left the field for half time.
Half Time: Washington FC 1- Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club BCA 1
No changes by either club for the second half and Washington continued to dominate possession and play as they did much of the first half. The Washington defence were able to handle most of what Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club could throw at them. There was never any panic from the back four. And when Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club were able to get in the Washington box, Gladstone was there to mop up.
Throughout the second half the Washington passing game was brilliant. Fast paced pass and move. On 55 minutes a good move from Stephen Edwards and Rhys Evans saw the ball crossed from the right and from 12 yards out Pilatos missed an air scissor kick with the ball going through his legs in mid-air.
A Washington throw from the left was delivered into the box, flicked on, and was saved by the Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club Keeper as Alex White was about to head goalward. A passing move between Andrew Brown and Pilatos went through to Matty Parker, who’s shot went just wide.
On 77 minutes Adam Shanks broke into the box and was brought down. Washington penalty. Up stepped Pickard to strike the ball to the right of the keeper into the inner side netting. Brilliantly taken. 2-1.
Washington continued to control the game and again Gladstone had very little to do for much of the second half. He was called into action for two corners and after Washington cleared the initial crosses the return shots were easily gathered by Gladstone. Washington would keep pushing forward with Evans making good runs down the wing but Washington couldn’t find that 3rd goal.
As the game grew to a close Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club were getting spurred on. Deep into injury time, a corner was saved by Gladstone for the ball to go out for another corner for Jarrow. The Washington Keeper was incensed claiming to have been caught by a Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club player. Pushing and shoving followed resulting in Jake Pickard getting booked. The in swinger was superbly tipped onto the bar by Gladstone and the ball was eventually cleared as far as Jarrow’s Goalkeeper a few yards in the Washinging 18 yard box. The volley by him ricocheted off Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Football Club captain Shaun Vipond and hit the back of the net. Vipond looked to be in an offside position but the Officials allowed the goal stating he was not interfering with play.
Newbrook claimed the goal. 2-2
After the restart, there was one further incident. Shaun Pickford was fouled from behind in a knee high two-foot challenge by Lee Kerr. Yellow card produced by the referee. It should have been red.
